After much debate, playoff committee ranks Georgia No. 1

There was really nothing to assail with Tuesday's first release.

While the first playoff rankings won't be released until Tuesday night, a look at this week's rankings show the conference is on the outside looking in, as Clemson now sits at No. 5 and Miami - the only unbeaten team left in the ACC - comes in at No. 6.

Auburn (6-2) was the nation's highest-ranked two-loss team at No. 14 in the initial rankings, with No. 16 Mississippi State (6-2) and No. 19 LSU (6-2) rounding out the SEC's involvement in the Top 25. STATE: Let's talk about that six-game win streak for the Wolfpack in between losses to SC and Notre Dame - those wins didn't do much for them. Yet, the committee isn't buying the Badgers' non-conference schedule of Utah State, BYU and Florida Atlantic. I'm focusing on the next four games and could care less about the poll.

Auburn enters a pivotal month of November with a trip to Texas A&M on Saturday (11 a.m., ESPN), followed by games against Georgia, ULM and Alabama. Since that loss, the Buckeyes have dominated and only further impressed by shutting down Heisman-hopeful Saquon Barkley and completing a comeback victory against an undefeated Penn State team.

The ranking may have, however, set college football arguing back a decade or so. The Demon Deacons come into town sitting at 5-3, but Notre Dame has already beaten better teams by a lot this year so the committee will be expecting to see Notre Dame win convincingly this weekend.

Although Alabama has been dominant, it doesn't have a win over a team now ranked in the committee's Top 25. "But we just want to take it one week at a time, and do what we can as a group to get better, keep winning games and let the pieces fall where they may". LSU 20. NC State 21.

At the top are two unbeaten SEC teams in Georgia and Alabama.

With matchups coming up against ranked opponents in Oklahoma State and TCU, the Sooners may finally have the opportunity they have been looking for to jump into the playoff conversation.

Georgia is No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll, but No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings. Seven teams started outside that top four and two of those were outside the top 10.

The good news is that Miami and Wisconsin have plenty of time to change that. Oklahoma State 12. Washington 13.
