Following a multiple-outlet bidding war, Apple has emerged as the victor for a morning show drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
Apple has been all-but-officially interested in the show since it hit the market this summer (so, reportedly, was Netflix). Aniston and Witherspoon will also executive produce the series.
An Apple spokeswoman would only say the series is "an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women (and men) who carry out this daily televised ritual". Aniston and Witherspoon will produce via their respective production companies, Echo Films and Hello Sunshine. (She earned an Emmy nomination for her performance on HBO's "Big Little Lies" earlier this year and shared in its victory for best limited series as one of its producers.) Heck, the show even has a "House of Cards" alum (Jay Carson) as its showrunner. Witherspoon memorably played Aniston's sister on the NBC sitcom, making this upcoming project a reunion of sorts.
Brian Stelter's book Top of the Morning had been optioned to provide additional background material, and Stelter will serve as a consultant on the series. Michael Ellenberg, the former head of drama at HBO, will also be an executive producer.
Reimagining the original anthology, Amazing Stories, executive produced by Spielberg in partnership with Bryan Fuller, "will transport the audience to worlds of wonder through the lens of today's most imaginative filmmakers, directors and writers". To date, Apple's original projects Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke have been released on the subscription-based Apple Music platform, but tech analysts expect Apple to broaden that strategy.
While Witherspoon just starred in Big Little Lies, the show marks Aniston's first regular TV role since Friends concluded in 2004.
