Roy Moore calls allegations against him 'completely false'

Alabama GOP nominee for Senate Roger Moore

"I will hold judgment until we know the facts", Alabama Republican Gov. Kay Ivey said Thursday evening.

Ziegler contends that the allegations against Moore are unlikely to impact his political run as he never had "sexual intercourse" with the 14-year-old girl in question, their relationship "happened nearly 40 years ago", and finally, "Moore fell in love with one of the younger women", namely his wife Kayla. One woman alleged that Moore touched her sexually and kissed her when she was 14 and he was 32. Three other women told the Post that Moore pursued them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s, working at the district attorney's office.

Facing a tough re-election, Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., likened Moore to Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, former Rep. Anthony Weiner and former Fox News executive Roger Ailes, all men accused of sexual misconduct.

As of Friday morning, the senators' pictures still appear on the online link to Moore's fundraising appeal. They've never been denominated as having rights by the U.S. Supreme Court.

"You understand this is 40 years ago and after the military, and I dated a number of young ladies", Moore said of the possibility of going on dates with other young women.

Doster, the adviser to Moore, said the candidate's campaign chairman, Bill Armistead, had talked to members of Alabama's congressional delegation after the news broke.

In the fundraising plea, Moore says "the Obama-Clinton Machine's liberal media lapdogs just launched the most vicious and nasty round of attacks against me I've EVER faced". "Even the Washington Post report says that he never had sexual intercourse with any of the girls and never attempted sexual intercourse".

Cory Gardner, R-Colorado, said that he should drop out of the Alabama Senate race if the allegations are true. Alabama's secretary of state confirmed Wednesday to CBS News that it is too late to change the ballot.

In Washington, Republican senators responded to the report with shock and dismay, telling reporters that if the claims were true, Moore should exit the race immediately. Skipper said that he would still support the candidate and that he figured most of the Alabama Republicans he knew would probably do the same.

And it was clear that many in his conservative base were in no mood to desert him in a race for a Senate seat Republicans consider crucial to maintaining their majority in the upper chamber. He has denied the allegations in a written statement, and in an email to his supporters, he said he meant to stay in the Senate race to fight the "forces of evil".

In the face of that stand-and-fight mentality by Moore, Republicans in Washington are left with a handful of bad - and likely ineffective - options.

Several religious scholars objected to Zeigler's use of the Bible to defend Moore.

A woman told The Washington Post that Republican Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore initiated a sexual encounter when she was 14 years old and he was 32 years old. "He should immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of", he said. The age of consent in Alabama, where these events are said to have happened, is 16.

Those familiar with recent polling of the Alabama race suggest it was always going to be close despite the state's strong Republican leanings - largely because of Moore's controversial past.
