Southgate added that he was not surprised by the powerhouse performance of the Chelsea star and backed the midfielder to use that display as a confidence booster for the rest of the season.

Every England fan knows from watching Wright as a pundit; there are not many more men passionate about England's national team than him. I don't think the wider public will be as aware of him, you would have to have followed him very closely, but we believe in him and the others we played.

"I'm really not surprised because of what I saw before those boys came in and what I've seen in training".

The first friendly in the build-up to the World Cup in Russian Federation could have been thrown off kilter by the withdrawal of seven players, yet a youthful Three Lions side took their chances to impress against the reigning world champions.

"If we won it would have been better but I'm really happy", he told ITV Sport.

He made some fine saves between the sticks, though he got social media talking following his pin-point distribution.

'Room for improvement but I felt a really healthy performance'.

"We'll see whether Phil [Jones] stays with us, definitely Angus [Gunn] following the injury to Jack [Butland]", Southgate confirmed when asked which players could be promoted for Tuesday's clash with Brazil. It would be a good experience for a couple of the under-21s to come with us anyway and have a couple of days with the senior team.

Loftus-Cheek was pulling the strings in midfield as England pushed for a goal, including feeding captain Dier to get away a cross that Mats Hummels had to hack behind his own goal.

He said: "Loftus-Cheek is a player I've watched do that since U16 level, and despite his size and appearance and the way he plays, he's not hugely confident at times. We'll liaise with Aidy on that and go from there".
