Egypt Sinai: Bomb and gun attack on mosque

Egypt's presidency declared a three-day mourning period, as President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi convened a high-level meeting of security officials.

"I am deeply saddened by the cowardly terrorist act that targeted a mosque, in northern Sinai, and resulting deaths and injuries, the Crown Prince said".

"Horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshipers in Egypt".

Three police officers, cited by the Associated Press, but wishing to remain anonymous, said that four men who had arrived in off-road vehicles opened fire on worshippers during the sermon.

The president said that Egypt will stand strong in the face of terrorism, and will continue its war against it.

The conflict has killed hundreds of soldiers and militants over the years, although journalists are banned from the area and exact numbers are unclear.

ISIS-aligned militants are entrenched in the Sinai Peninsula and have clashed with Egyptian security forces there for several years. The affiliate also is believed to have been behind the 2016 downing of a Russian passenger jet that killed 226 people.

On Friday Morning, a massive explosion in Al-Rawada mosque, located in the town of Beer El Abed, in North Sinai's Al-Arish. The attackers also opened fire on ambulances, witnesses said. Sufis are considered by Islamic fundamentalists to be apostates and are frequently the target of Islamic militants.

"What is happening in North Sinai is a real reflection of our efforts to combat terrorism, and Egypt is in this war alone on behalf of the region, and the entire world" al-Sisi went on to say.

North Sinai, which stretches from the Suez Canal eastwards to the Gaza Strip and Israel, has always been a security headache for Egyptian security forces because of smuggling.

Militants have tried to expand their operations into Egypt's heavily populated mainland, hitting Coptic Christian churches and pilgrims.
