Essential President Niccolo de Masi will run the day to day operations at the company in his absence. So, simplifying the information that's out there thus far - Mr. Rubin had an alleged relationship with an employee at Google, breaking company policy, which may or may not have been a catalyst in his leaving the company.
Google reportedly began investigating the relationship after the woman in the situation filed a complaint with human resources sometime in 2014.
Rubin is on a leave of absence from his new startup after the media unearthed a Google report of his allegedly "inappropriate" relationship with another employee in the Android division.
Rubin was in charge of Google's robotic division when he left, which he joined after creating the Android team.
Miki Sitrick, a spokesperson for Rubin, told the publication: "Any relationship that Mr. Rubin had while at Google was consensual and did not involve any person who reported directly to him". Essential, his new company, is an attempt to build out an ecosystem of premium hardware products, but its first launch appears to have been a flop - the otherwise well-received Essential Phone has seen heavy discounts in recent weeks.
Asked if Rubin's new leave of absence was a result of these new reports coming to light, the Essential spokesperson would not offer any additional comment.
There is no telling how long Rubin will be absent from Essential. According to multiple reports, his departure coincided with the start of Google's investigation.
Another high-profile former Google manager also was accused of inappropriate behavior while at the company. Just like the ouster of Rubin, Singhal too left Google in a move that came as a surprise to many. Rubin's decision comes amid heightened scrutiny of impropriety and sexual misconduct in technology, entertainment, politics and other industries. Yesterday, NBC terminated "Today" host Matt Lauer after allegations of sexual misconduct occurred throughout his tenure at the network.
