An American 757-200 pulls into the gate at Chicago O'Hare International Airport
On Wednesday, American and the APA sparred over whether the airline could offer pilots extra pay in order to get them to fill the open slots.
The trouble for American Airlines comes two months after Irish low-priced carrier Ryanair said it would cancel more 20,000 flights between November and March after admitting it "messed up" the transition to a new system for scheduling employee vacations.
However, it turned out that their good fortune in getting the holidays off was more than a spot of luck; there was a massive glitch that allowed pilots to schedule time off during a time when the airline couldn't afford to lose staff. More than 15,000 flights were without full pilot crews between December 17 and 31, the union said.
The flawed system incorrectly showed the airline had ample coverage for planned flights and allowed pilots to drop some trips they had been assigned because it wrongly showed there were others willing to pick them up.
About American Airlines Group American Airlines and American Eagle offer an average of almost 6,700 flights per day to almost 350 destinations in more than 50 countries.
But the union representing pilots disputed the airline's calculations, saying Thursday that "thousands of flights are still listed as unassigned". We are pleased to report that together, American and the Allied Pilots Association have put that worry to rest to make sure our flights will operate as scheduled.
American has about 200,000 flights scheduled for December and operates an average of 6,700 daily.
On Friday, after pilots sat down with American's senior leadership, the union announced it had withdrawn a grievance, which said that American's initial solution to the staffing shortage violated the pilots' contract because of how it restricted overtime pay.
Both APA and American declined to detail the exact nature of the agreement, but the deal comes at a time when airlines' rising labor costs are in the spotlight. We have not canceled any scheduled flights in December and will continue to work to ensure both our pilots and our customers are cared for. Still, stressed fliers took to social media, asking the airline if they'd be able to make it home during the busy holiday season.
