For lack of anything better, protests are being organized nationwide outside Verizon stores.
The Federal Communications Commission will vote on whether or not to deregulate net neutrality on December 14; the result could potentially cause internet service at SFA to be limited or create extra fees for students. Many protests will be happening on Saturday as well. "IA and its members will continue our fight to preserve the 2015 Order and its strong, enforceable net neutrality protections".
Protestors targeted Verizon stores because Ajit Pai, the current chairman of the FCC, previously served as associate general counsel at Verizon, which has been a longtime opponent of net neutrality. The city of NY and 40 advocacy groups including Public Knowledge, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Center for Digital Democracy also sent the FCC a letter asking for a delay.
The FCC's vote is now scheduled to take place on December 14th and as that date has gotten closer, a number of groups have requested the FCC consider a delay. "We're protesting at retail stores across the USA to demand that Congress stop Verizon's puppet FCC from destroying the Internet as we know it". Net neutrality supporters disrupted an FCC meeting in April this year with a "Rickroll"; they sang Rick Astley's famous song but with modified lyrics proclaiming their love of common carriers. ISPs can also set up "fast lanes" of internet.
The FCC vote to repeal Title II classification for telecoms companies is scheduled for Thursday, December 14th.
