United States ambassador casts doubt on whether American athletes will attend Winter Olympics

Robots developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology will help provide spectators and athletes with information and help during Pyeongchang 2018

"The protection of Americans is our top priority and we are engaged with the South Koreans and other partner nations to secure the venues".

The tweet came less than an hour after Sanders said at the White House daily press briefing that the USA government - and President Donald Trump - had yet to decide whether to participate, appearing to raise doubts about the safety of visitors to South Korea, a key ally.

But despite Haley's claims that these are ongoing conversations, United States Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Jones told The New York Times that there have been no discussions about American attendance in Pyeongchang.

The existence of this Olympic Truce made many Twitter users wonder why Haley would feel the need to call American participation in the South Korean games into question.

The International Olympic Committee announced the ban after a 17-month investigation into state-sponsored doping in Russian Federation.

The Games will be held in Pyeongchang, just 50 miles (80km) from the border that separates the North and South.

This comes with the United States still at a de facto state of war with North Korea and tensions being raised dramatically on the Korean Peninsula since President Trump took office back in January.

However, North Korea has issued similar threats in the past, often condemning Washington and Seoul.

Photo Nikki R. Haley, the American ambassador to the United Nations, at the Security Council in November. "There's an open question", she said.

"There's an open question", Haley responded.

"What we will do is make sure we are taking every precaution possible to make sure that [U.S. athletes are] safe and to know everything that's going on around them", Haley said Wednesday on "The Story with Martha MacCallum". "We are really confident in this, so this message can be relayed to the athletes by the (National Olympic Committees)".

"We have to watch this closely, and it's changing by the day".

But her concerns and stated uncertainty had already bounced around the Olympic world as officials from the United States to Pyeongchang offered reassurances. "We have regular communication with the USOC, and they always express their commitment of the athletes coming over to Pyeongchang".

"As with every Games, the safety of our employees is always our number one consideration", he said.
