France Recalls Baby Formula Brands after Salmonella Cases Detected in Babies

'Millions' of Lactalis baby milk products in worldwide recall after salmonella scare

Major recall of Lactalis baby milk over salmonella fears

Lactalis then recalled 12 of its infant products.

French national news agency Agence France-Presse quoted a Lactilis spokesman as saying that "nearly 7,000 tonnes" (7,700 tons) of production may have been contaminated.

"We've chose to take this measure because salmonella contamination was detected at a production location in France where one of the ingredients is made", said Kruidvat, based in the central Dutch town of Renswoude.

Bercy explains in his statement that the measures taken by the group since December 2 are "not likely to control the risk of contamination" by these bacteria.

In addition to Orient EuroPharma, Standard Foods Corp. and Multipower Enterprise Corp. also imports Lactalis' formula. The French government published a list online of all the different formulas that it said can no longer be marketed or exported. The company was disinfecting all of its machinery at the factory as a precautionary measure.

The baby formula product in question is sold in 900 gram tins and is suitable for children 1-3, according to the Orient EuroPharma website.

French baby-milk maker Lactalis and health authorities have ordered a major global product recall because of fears of salmonella contamination, following 26 cases of children falling sick in France.

Chinese consumers are especially sensitive to health scares in baby food after melamine-tainted baby milk led to the death of six children and caused hundreds of thousands of others to fall ill in 2008.

The symptoms of salmonella infection include abdominal cramps, diarrhea and fever.

Most people recover without treatment, but young children, as well as the elderly and people with compromised immune systems, have a greater risk of becoming severely ill. The bacteria is especially risky for infants and the elderly due to risks of dehydration.
