Netflix reportedly asked users to pressure elected officials about the legislation, and it was amended in the company's favor in 2013.

Several users called the message "creepy" and questioned how closely Netflix monitors viewing habits.

While the tweet was clearly intended as a joke, it didn't sit well with some customers who found the message "creepy". A Christmas Prince, for all you Grinches out there, is a Netflix original movie with Hallmark-level quality about a reporter who goes undercover, yadda yadda yadda, there's a hot prince, etc.

There were some users, however, who seemed happy to engage with the streaming site's tweet, snapping back with their own witty replies, and even joining the Netflix account in a war of words in some cases.

Now, Netflix has responded to the criticism and confirmed that the figure refers to collated trends and not individual viewing habits. All that matters is that it's another cheesy Christmas movie premise, only this time with royal douchery weaved ever-so-seamlessly throughout the plot. Shaming its subscribers, even in jest, for a feel-good film meant to cheer up its viewers didn't sit well with everyone.

Ever since Netflix dropped its original movie A Christmas Prince last month, festive-obsessed viewers swiftly added it to their annual must-watch list. "This information represents overall viewing trends, not the personal viewing information of specific, identified individuals", it said.

The intention was humorous, but many of Netflix's followers on Twitter were angry at the frivolous use of customer data. But, clearly, some people really like it.

It makes you think about how much data Netflix is hoarding about each user.
