Mayweather turns 41 in February and has never fought MMA professionally. "MMA next", he said when a TMZ reporter asked him about his next bout, perhaps against Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather retired with an unblemished 50-0 record in the boxing ring after beating UFC superstar Conor McGregor by technical knockout. UFC president Dana White told ESPN on Wednesday that Mayweather is interested in making a move to the octagon.
On his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, UFC commentator, Joe Rogan, claimed Mayweather and UFC commissioner Dana White are in talks about scheduling the McGregor/Mayweather rematch, but this time under MMA rules instead of the standard boxing regulations.
"Conor is the only option for him", Woodley says. noting McGregor is "really a stand-up fighter" and doesn't pose as big of a threat as other UFC stars who specialize in wrestling or jiu-jitsu.
"Floyd talked about it. He usually tips his hand when he's in the media, and then that s*** ends up happening".
"We're talking to Floyd about doing a UFC deal". Everything is a realistic possibility.
While it's hard to believe that Mayweather would put his ideal fighting record on the line to enter a UFC fight, the same could have been said before he and Conor McGregor met in the boxing ring earlier in the year.
During a live social media stream earlier this month, however, Mayweather said he could sign with UFC. "I can come right back". So, for Floyd Mayweather, if I was coming into the sport to do MMA, I would want an opponent like that: a striker. Like legitimately. So, I texted him, 'Is Floyd really talking about fighting in MMA?' And he goes, 'Yeah, he's f*****g insane.
It's now unclear whether Mayweather will have another professional boxing fight.
In all honesty it still seems like a pie-in-the-sky scenario that Mayweather would agree to an MMA fight in the UFC as he has a flawless, unblemished record in boxing, while competing in the Octagon would nearly certainly hand him a humiliating defeat. White told ESPN that global pay-per-view buys settled around 6.5 million.
