THESE are the squalid conditions British tourist Laura Plummer could face after she was jailed for three years for smuggling painkillers into Egypt.

Laura Plummer was arrested in October after being found with 290 tramadol pills in her suitcase. Plummer's family said she did not realize Tramadol was illegal in Egypt when she chose to bring the pills to help with her husband's chronic back pain, which she obtained from a friend, the BBC reports.

Ms Plummer's lawyer Mohamed Othman said the allegations against his client were "illogical" as her plane ticket was "double the price" of the pills.

"It will take a while and she has to go back to the prison", said Plummer's mother, Roberta Synclair. "We're just hoping. Even half of that (three years' imprisonment) would be better". The family have also denied reports in the media that Caboo has abandoned Plummer for any other wife and/or girlfriend, saying he is "heartbroken" and has stood by her side since day one.

The painkiller Laura was carrying is a prescription drug in the United Kingdom but is banned in Egypt. "She doesnt deserve that", Rachel said.

Plummer, a shop worker, appeared in court on Monday, but the judged adjourned the hearings to Tuesday.

He said: "For someone to be found guilty of drug smuggling they have to be aware that they are possessing narcotics".

Her lawyer told Sky News that the idea she was a drug trafficker was illogical as she made no attempt to hide what she was transporting. "Laura did not know that what she was carrying was a narcotic", he said. "Even the plane ticket is nearly double the price of those pills", Othman said. Her family told British newspapers she bought the tablets for her Egyptian partner living in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada.

The Plummers' local member of parliament, Karl Turner, said Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt had raised her case with Egyptian authorities.

According to her family, Laura has been held in a packed cell with 25 other female prisoners since her arrest in October, and has been having suicidal thoughts.
