Barack Obama's numbers were down from 22 percent the previous year, but he was the first former president to win since Dwight D. Eisenhower did so in 1967 and 1968. Of those 71 surveys, the incumbent president has won 58 times, the poll noted. "The incumbent president is the usual victor, since he is arguably the most prominent figure in the country", Gallup reports.

Trump was looking up to him in the polls, with 14% saying they most admired the current President.

Other notable names making the top 10 include Pope Francis, Rev. Billy Graham, Oprah Winfrey and Sen. Bernie Sanders, Bill Gates, Vice President Mike Pence and the Dalai Lama with a respective 1 percent.

Clinton has been named "most-admired" more than any other woman or man in Gallup's polling history - 22 times in total - but saw her share of the vote reach its lowest point in 15 years.

Wednesday's poll said 17% of its participants most admired Obama. The next winningest woman is Eleanor Roosevelt, at 13 times.

Clinton "remains arguably more prominent than other contenders", Jones wrote in a blog post announcing the findings. Clinton narrowly topped Michelle Obama 9 to 7 percent.

The poll surveyed 1,049 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia between December 4-11, 2017 with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
