Nintendo Risks Pissing Off Developers With Delay Of 64 GB Game Cards

Nintendo Switch 64GB Game Cards Delayed To 2019

October releases

Nintendo now offers cartridges in capacities of 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. According to the report, Nintendo ran into "technical issues" with the 64 GB cards. However, according to The Wall Street Journal as reported by The Verge, Nintendo just delayed them into 2019. But with a 64GB game cartridge, that problem would be solved. Still, that may be enough to keep some games off the console or leave some Nintendo fans wishing the company would put some more room on the Switch. Given that the Switch itself sports less powerful hardware than its Sony or Microsoft brethern, some developers may simply choose not to bother with Nintendo's console at all. For example, National Basketball Association 2K18 on Switch requires an additional microSD card because of the hybrid system's small internal storage of 32 gigabytes. When it's easy to go out and buy memory cards with a capacity of 200GB, it seems ridiculous that Nintendo would be struggling with a 64GB cartridge, but that seems to be the case. WSJ says that those developers now "may wait" until the larger cartridges are available before releasing their games.

It's a shame this has happened as 64GB cartridges are the sweet spot for Nintendo.

Such a scenario is already visible in Japan, where Square Enix charges more for the Dragon Quest Heroes 1 and 2 on the Switch than the PS4 because the game ships on a 32GB cartridge instead of the usual 8GB or 16GB, notes Gadgets360. For downloading digital games, Switch users have to utilize compatible microSD cards, with the console's internal memory only having 24 GB available.
