A status orange wind warning has been issued for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Westmeath and Meath.

Met Éireann's Twitter reiterated the reports, explaining: "Storm Dylan will affect Ireland on Saturday night to early Sunday morning".

The low pressure weather system is expected to land near Donegal Bay and track up along the northern coast of Ulster, before passing towards southern Scotland.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for Munster, and the rest of Leinster, including counties Dublin, Carlow, Kildare, Wexford, Wicklow and Offaly.

Met Eireann says that the biggest impact of the storm will be across Connacht and Ulster where mean speeds will reach 60 to 80km/hr with gusts of up to 120km/hr.


Wind speeds of between 50 and 65km/h and gusts between 90 and 110km/h are also forecast in some places.

Another bout of sleet and snow is expected to fall early on Friday night, but the showers will turn to rain later, which will wash away any accumulated snow in many places.

Looking ahead to the New Year period, Ramsdale added: "Colder and showery weather looks likely for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day will feature wintry showers in the north". Highest temperatures 6 to 10 degrees are expected.

He said: "One of the most frequent calls we might get, apart from if we did have a storm and there were overhead wires that were down and people had no supply, is sometimes when people's main fuse blows".
