And that will feel nice compared to what's in store for New Year's Day. BWI also tied a record low of 10 degrees from 1950. Highs on Tuesday will struggle to get back above freezing. The mercury will plunge to near zero Monday night.

Risky wind chills will likely continue into New Year's Eve night. As this dry, arctic air approaches, it will be hard to squeeze out any moisture this far south.

In fact, you may want to reconsider partying outside this New Year's Eve, given the biting cold and chance for snow in the forecast. At the same time, cold air will be spilling in from the north.

Most of the wintry mix should be done by mid-day - then the attention turns to the harsh cold expected to infiltrate the region throughout the next several days.

Some freezing drizzle could develop Sunday and last through Monday morning.

Temperatures will remain well below average today, with highs only forecast to be in the mid single digits. In these areas wind chills could drop to between -10 and -20.
