The New Year's Day moon will be the closest to Earth of the three supermoons - and will probably be the biggest and brightest moon of 2018. Since the Moon's orbit is elliptical, one side (apogee) is about 30,000 miles (50,000 km) farther from Earth than the other (perigee).
A "supermoon" will rise just after sunset on Monday, the second in a "trilogy" of big moons in December and January. The researchers chose it because it was an easy distraction to study: the presence of a full moon at the time of a crash can be empirically verified, but people aren't always honest about whether they were looking at their phones, or accurate in their memory of the thing that caught their eye on the roadside. The moon will appear to be oversized for a few nights after that, though will no longer be a full moon.
Low hanging moons near the horizon appear larger to humans. You nearly feel as though you could reach out, grab the glowing orb, and drop it into your coffee cup. When the researchers isolated supermoon nights, the difference was even more striking: there were 10.82 fatal crashes, on average, on nights lit by the light of a supermoon. "It will be extra special", NASA added. Find out when and how to see the two supermoons, blue moon, blood moon and lunar eclipse!
During a lunar eclipse, the moon moves into Earth's shadow, so the only light reaching the moon's surface is reflected off the Earth's atmosphere.
The 1st of 2 January 2018 full moons falls on the evening of 1 January 2018, for most of the Western Hemisphere and on 2 January for the Eastern Hemisphere.
"Folks in the eastern United States, where the eclipse will be partial, will have to get up in the morning to see it". "But it's another great chance to watch the Moon". When the moon loses its brightness, it takes on a reddish glow. Noah Petro, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in a release.
Having two full moons in one month makes the second one a blue moon - so the January 31 lunar spectacle will be a "super blue blood" moon.
The first full moon of the year is named after howling wolves.
During the eclipse, the reds at the end of the color spectrum will hit the moon, turning it "kind of a blood orange color", said Richard Ozer, 56, president of the Eastbay Astronomical Society, who plans to get up early to photograph the event if the weather cooperates.
