Lottery players across the country are hoping for some good luck to start 2018 with hundreds of millions of dollars up for grabs.

"The cold weather hasn't stopped those wanting to buy lottery tickets", said Corby Mead, manager of the Stogie's Discount Tobacco & Beer Downtown Store at 17 Washington Ave.in Huntington.

This week they'll also be putting cash down on the Mega Millions for a jackpot that has soared to $343 million, the eight largest in Mega Millions history. The cash option for Wednesday's Powerball jackpot is $278 million.

The odds of a $2 ticket hitting the jackpot are more than 292 million to 1.

There was no victor for Saturday's $384 million Powerball jackpot, and now the prize has risen to a whopping $440 million.


The last time anyone won was on October 13, when Mega Millions winners in MI and Rhode Island shared the $42 million drawing.

The lottery jackpot numbers just keep climbing. Six Mega Millions jackpots were won in 2017. Eastern Time and Powerball drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday evenings at 10:59 p.m.

While the chance of winning either game is very low, and the chance of winning both is very, very, very low - 1 in 88 quadrillion, or 1 in 88,412,922,115,183,000 to be precise.
