Utah's Sen. Orrin Hatch won't seek re-election, opening path for Mitt Romney

"I was an amateur boxer in my youth, and I brought that fighting spirit with me to Washington", he said. "But every good fighter knows when to hang up the gloves." said Hatch in the video.

Republicans with a close eye on the race said they expect Romney to run for Hatch's seat, and have seen signs that his allies have always been gearing up for a bid.

Three candidates from the 2012 Republican presidential primary are now weighing Senate bids, including the eventual GOP nominee Mitt Romney, who is expected to run to succeed Sen.

Shortly after Hatch's announcement, Romney posted a statement on his Facebook page congratulating Hatch for his more than 40 years of service in the Senate.

Romney has until March 15 to file for Hatch's seat.

In his retirement announcement, Mr. Hatch dwelled on his long record, which includes popular, bipartisan initiatives like the Children's Health Insurance Program and the Americans With Disabilities Act, as well as more partisan achievements, like his prominent role in the confirmation of Supreme Court justices and his authorship of last month's tax law, which passed without a Democratic vote.

Sanders would not say if Trump would back Romney.

Amid earlier speculation about Hatch's plans, the Utah senator stepped up to defend Romney, a fellow Mormon.

In December, The Salt Lake Tribune published a scathing editorial calling on Hatch to step down - as the paper named him as "The Tribune's Utahn of the Year", noting that he has never wielded more clout.

Hatch, 83, is the longest-serving GOP Senator in US history, having first been elected in 1977.

Utah is a great state for Romney and a bad one for Bannon, which means that the former White House chief strategist would be under little pressure. "Ann and I wish Senator Orrin Hatch and his loving wife Elaine all the best in their future endeavors".

Brown, a liberal firebrand, said people know Republicans want to help the rich because it's "in their DNA". President Donald Trump had urged Hatch to run again, but Hatch said in his last campaign that this would be his final term. As the two senators talked over each other, Hatch said he was exhausted of Democrats' "bull crap". Trump had encouraged Hatch to run for re-election.

No matter who will replace Hatch, his decision to retire has broader implications, given his chairmanship of the important Finance committee and his seniority on other committees.

In 2000, Hatch dabbled in presidential politics himself.
