Hot Air balloon crash

A tourist was killed and 12 other people were injured in a hot air balloon crash near Luxor in Egypt on Friday (Jan 5), state-run news agency MENA reported. The tourist who died was South African.

Egyptian authorities blamed strong winds, saying they had blown the balloon off its course and into a mountainous area.

Luxor governor Mahmoud Badr confirmed the incident, adding that he visited the injured tourists who are now being treated at hospital, according to the BBC, citing AFP.

There were reports that up to 12 people were injured.

All of those involved in the accident are believed to be foreign tourists.

In September 2016, Egypt suspended hot air balloons flights over Luxor due to poor weather conditions that led to the injury of tens of tourists in a balloon crash landings.

The incident comes after 19 foreign tourists were killed when their balloon caught fire in the same city in 2013.

Sixteen people were injured in a Luxor hot air balloon flight in 2011 as well.
