When will city schools be heated properly?

Baltimore City schools have lost out on millions of dollars for repairs to heating systems and other infrastructure needs when the money went unspent and had to be returned to the state. On Wednesday, four schools were closed and two others were dismissed early.

"We are doing our best trying to match keeping the building as warm and comfortable as possible, with the fact that these kids have to be in school and educated", Scroggins said. "Schools are also in need of hats, gloves, coats, socks, etc. for their students so if you would like to donate what you have, feel free to contact us via gofundme".

"It's really ridiculous the kind of environment we place our children into and expect them to get an education", Maybin said.

In a now viral video, Maybin talks with his elementary school students about how cold they are in their classrooms.

Maybin was in the National Football League from 2009-2012.

"Yesterday I had frostbite", one boy yells. "School is closed today so I will be collecting items myself". They did not provide further explanation if the schools' closures were prompted by the impending storm that hit much of the eastern U.S. on Thursday or if the closures were prompted by the reports of cold indoor temperatures at schools.

"Kids can't learn and teachers can't teach in freezing classrooms and in schools with no heat, frozen pipes and frigid winds coming in through drafty windows", Weingarten said in a statement. "But we also understand, and I hear people, that this is sustained cold".

"Any good mother would take their children out of school", Chastity Spears, a parent, told a reporter.

Maybin played his high school football in Ellicott City, Md., which is about 25 minutes west of Baltimore. "The water is cold! It's inhumane for these children".

"I implore that you close schools in the District until your facilities crew has had time to properly assess and fix the heating issues within the affected schools in Baltimore City", said Baltimore Teachers Union President Marietta English in a letter for the school system's CEO Wednesday, according to The Baltimore Sun.

"The schools are controlled by the local school board and the Superintendent who are both under the City's control", he wrote...
