Ibuprofen Was Just Linked to Male Infertility
10 January 2018, 12:27 | Nichole Osborne
A new joint Danish-French research project has discovered that taking the medicament for only 14 days can cause damage to men's testosterone production, reports DR Nyheder.
Now, before you panic, there's no suggestion yet that occasionally relying on an ibuprofen will make your balls shrivel up and die.
"Our immediate concern is for the fertility of men who use these drugs for a long time", study author David Møbjerg Kristensen, of the University of Copenhagen, told the newspaper.
Ibuprofen belongs to a group of drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, or NSAIDs. Fourteen of them took a daily dosage of ibuprofen that many professional and amateur athletes take: 600 milligrams twice a day. While the testosterone levels in the men taking ibuprofen had not changed, researchers found their pituitary glands were boosting testosterone production anyway, inducing the compensated hypogonadism.
Aspirin, the best-selling NSAID on the USA market, was initially linked to stomach problems but was thought to be otherwise safe. The painkiller users could potentially face prolonged low testosterone levels after the body loses its ability to compensate, leading to a host of health conditions including muscle weakness and loss, low fertility, and other issues.
Before you go raid your medicine cabinet, Advil and Motrin are two brand names for ibuprofen. LH's job is to stimulate the production of testosterone, so higher levels of LH without corresponding higher levels of testosterone could suggest an issue in the way the body's hormones are functioning.
Previous research by the team, which focused on pregnant women, had found that the use of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen during pregnancy affected the testicles of male babies.
"The study shows that ibuprofen use results in selective transcriptional repression of endocrine cells in the human testis", the significance on the PNAS site reads. The 17 other volunteers were given a placebo pill.
The findings are certainly significant, as the 1,200mg of ibuprofen given to the participants each day is far below the suggested daily maximum of 3,200mg per day. "It is also associated with depression and increased risk for cardiovascular events, including heart failure and stroke".
