Up until December 30, 2017, there were 11,275 laboratory-confirmed cases across the country, 74 per cent of which are attributed to influenza A. There have been a total of 1,050 influenza-related hospitalizations and 34 deaths across the country.

There have been 3,854 total flu-associated hospitalizations in OH since flu season began last October, according to ODH.

The H3N2 virus, a.k.a. influenza A, is the main strain making people sick, and it's tough to fight.

White County Public Health nurse Marsha Oilar said a 91-year-old man from Reynolds, Indiana has died because of the virus.

"We've seen an increasing number of cases in the last week", said Dr. Luis Manrique, an infectious disease specialist who has been working at both Delnor and Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

Arizona is among 26 states that the federal Centers for Disease Control said have high flu activity, with widespread activity reported in 46 states.

"Flu is hard to predict", said ODH Medical Director Dr. Clint Koenig.

People getting the flu from the vaccine is a misconception, de Lota said.

Healthy lifestyle habits can also protect you from seasonal illness. Byrne says, "It's a high fever, usually over a hundred degrees, with a severe headache and body aches, and extreme fatigue that can last up to three weeks; and you could have a cough".

"Normally in a season, we'll see a peak of influenza A happening some time towards the end of December or through January", Murti said Monday. "Public health is our first priority, and I strongly encourage community members to get vaccinated and help prevent the spread of the flu".

"We're having a more severe season (than last year), but two years ago we had a very mild season", she said. "There are reports that the vaccine is only 10 percent effective this year, but it's really too early to tell".

"Flu is hard to predict", said Dr. Clint Koenig, Ohio Department of Health medical director.

Visitors are also being urged to stay away from residential care facilities if they have respiratory symptoms, or the diarrhea and nausea associated with Norovirus or similar gastro-intestinal infections. "They work best when started within two days of getting sick".

Canada's flu shot was less effective than usual this year, said the National Post.

"These antiviral medications can reduce the severity of the flu and prevent serious flu complications", Koenig said.
