Conte had mostly fielded fringe players en route to the last four, but Eden Hazard, back from a calf injury, N'Golo Kante and Thibaut Courtois were called upon with a Wembley showdown against Manchester City or Bristol City in sight.

Chances were few and far between as the number of matches played recently took its toll, with both teams looking sluggish.

Hazard missed Saturday's FA Cup third-round 0-0 at Norwich City with a minor injury but is due to return for the game at Stamford Bridge.

The 26-year-old was handed the captain's armband for the tie at Stamford Bridge - which ended in a goalless stalemate - but after he went to ground holding his right ankle, the England worldwide grimaced at the thought of another injury lay-off. Alvaro Morata will start, dropping Batshuayi to the bench.

Chelsea responded with their own chance two minutes later when Victor Moses cut inside before drilling a low strike towards the near post which David Ospina needed two attempts to collect with Cesc Fabregas lurking.

Andreas Christensen should have had the opener soon after half-time, but he somehow managed to put his back-post header over the bar after a fine flick-on from a set piece. Chelsea fans turned to gloat and taunt him after each of their goals as Arsenal fell to...

Chelsea and Arsenal met earlier this month at Emirates Stadium in Premier League play, with the two London sides playing to a 2-2 draw.

Chelsea have now drawn three games in row for the first time since January 2013 and have failed to win their opening three games of a calendar year for the first time in 25 years, while it is only the second time in Arsene Wenger's tenure that Arsenal have also been left winless three games into a new year.

Arsenal and Chelsea finished the match with a 0-0 draw ahead of the second leg on January 24.
