Google says that its network delivers up to 25 percent of the world's internet traffic. The unique position gives the company a concerning amount of power.
The Chile to Los Angeles connection, dubbed Curie, is of particular significance to the firm, as it reportedly marks Google out as the first non-telco to build a private intercontinental cable. These investments are created to help improve connectivity around the world, and will help Google expand its reach and the availability of its cloud services.
Google cites key benefits of owning the cable which includes allowing it to define the technical specifications as well as "make routing decisions that optimise for latency and availability". Once deployed, Curie will be Chile's largest single data pipe.
The cable would be the highest capacity trans-Pacific system, with a capacity of 120 terabits-per-second, and is the sixth undersea cable the Google has taken part in.
"By deploying our own private subsea cable, we help improve global connectivity while providing value to our customers", Sloss continued, explaining the reason behind the new investments.
Early work has already begun on selecting the exact route the Havfrue cable will follow. This expansion encompasses much of the globe, with three new submarine cables and data centers in five new regions planned. Havfrue, a consortium cable with Facebook, Aqua Comms and Bulk Infrastructure, will run the U.S. to Denmark and Ireland, coming online in late 2019.
They join eight additional cables in which Google has direct investment, as well as many more from which the company leases capacity. Facebook, Aqua Comms, and Bulk Infrastructure are also involved in the development of the cable, which will be built by TE Subcom and is due for completion in 2019. Customers in the areas these cables connect will experience faster and better Google Cloud Platform and G Suite services as a result of the increased network capacity and connectivity.
