Findings from both NASA and NOAA were shown to be closely aligned with recent analyses conducted by the World Meteorological Organization and the UK's Meteorological Office - the two most widely revered temperature authorities in the world.

In a separate analysis, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) found 2017 was the third-warmest year on record.

President Trump may have doubts about climate change, but a pair of new federal reports indicate that our planet's long-term warming trend continues - and that 2017 was one of the hottest years on record.

2017 was the second-hottest year ever recorded, according to a new NASA report.

Consolidated data from five leading global weather agencies shows that "2015, 2016 and 2017 have been confirmed as the three warmest years on record", the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said. But it adds that 2016's temperatures were heightened by an El Niño event.

Arctic regions have been warmed the most, which has caused a loss of sea ice.

NOAA calculated that 2017 was the third-warmest year on record in its database.

"When even "colder" (non-El Nino) years are rewriting the warmest year record books we know we have a problem", said Dave Reay, the Carbon Management chair at the University of Edinburgh.

The globe hasn't had a cooler-than-average year since 1976 - a stretch of 41 consecutive warm years - NOAA said.

The 2015 Paris agreement, which seeks to shift the world economy from fossil fuels this century, aims to limit temperatures to "well below" a rise of 2C above pre-industrial times while pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5C.

The 21st century has so far been a period of the hottest weather, accounting for 17 of the 18 warmest years on record.

The observed warming has been predicted within a few tenths of a degree in computer simulations going back to the 1970s and 1980s, several scientists said.

Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said correspondents on Thursday, "The planet is warming remarkably uniformly". However, the two reports agree that Earth is undergoing a long-term warming trend that shows no sign of abating, and that rising temperatures are driven by human activity, largely through the production of greenhouse gasses.

The warming trend continued as President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the 2015 Paris Climate Accord and repeal the Clean Power Plan, an Obama-era measure created to reduce emissions from power generation.

An analysis of five worldwide datasets revealed that the global average surface temperature in 2017 was roughly 1.1C above the pre-industrial era.
