Cocaine Smugglers Are Using Pineapples to Hide Drugs Now

Cocaine pineapple ring caught smuggling 745kg of drugs disguised as tropical fruit into Europe

Spain, Portugal seize cocaine smuggled inside pineapples

Police in Portugal and Spain say they seized almost a ton of cocaine hidden inside pineapples.

Through August past year, Sri Lankan customs seized six shipments of high-quality South American cocaine in 14 months, including Asia's largest-ever haul of the drug in December 2016, at its main port.

Police said the seizure came after an investigation that began in April 2017. Authorities say the smugglers would pack the cocaine into a cylinder shape, cover it in yellow wax and then place it inside of a hollowed out pineapple. Investigators also dismantled a drugs laboratory where the drug was cut with additives.

According to a police press release, the gang stored their cocaine in Terrasa, Barcelona, before transporting it to their Madrid laboratories every 15-20 days.

'This organised global group had repeatedly brought large quantities of cocaine to the European continent, ' Portuguese investigators said in a statement.

It is believed that the disguised cocaine shipment travelled from Panama to the port of Lisbon by sea, RTE reported. Also seized was €400,000 (A$612,680) in cash.

Spain and Portugal are two major routes used by drug smugglers to get their products into Europe. The Iberian Peninsula is a common entry point for illegal drugs before they're distributed across the continent.
