Cardinals "Closing In" To Make Steve Wilks Head Coach

Vikings never were in NFC title game

Wilks, 48, took over as defensive coordinator for the Panthers last season.

Cardinals offensive tackle D.J. Humphries also expressed support for Wilks, who like him is a native of Charlotte.

The Arizona Cardinals might be done with their coaching search sooner than anyone expected and, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, are locking in on Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks as their next head coach. Wilks stepped into the role vacated by Sean McDermott this season and changed the Panthers defense in a positive way. Prior to his time in the NFL, Washington had three separate stints as a college coach, first serving as a member of Texas A&M's coaching staff in 1997, which lasted just one year. He has 11 years of coaching experience at the college level before he began his time in the National Football League as defensive backs coach for the Bears in 2006. The Cardinals will likely transition to a 4-3 base, which is the same scheme Wilks and Holcomb used in Carolina. However, the Panthers were top-10 in yards allowed and had the third most sacks in the NFL.

Despite mediocre numbers from the Arizona defense in 2017, Wilks inherits quite a lot of talent on that side of the ball.

Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson, upon seeing the news leak out, tweeted out an emphatic message in all capital letters: "I LOVE IT".
