England Women's boss Neville deletes Twitter account after backlash to sexist tweets

London, Jan 24 No sooner had Phil Neville been appointed the new head coach of the England women's team than he found himself facing flak for "sexist" Tweets.

"I am honoured to be given the chance to lead England".

Neville added that "there is no greater honor than representing your country and it will be a privilege to do it again" as he represented England at EURO 96 and EURO 2000, winning 59 caps in his nine-year global career.

In posts dated from 2012, he said: "Morning men, couple of hours cricket before work sets me up nicely for the day".

Interim manager Mo Marley, who took charge following Sampson's departure, is expected to return to her role in charge of the Under-19 squad.

England hope to stage the 2021 European Championships, with Neville taking over a team that reached the last four of the 2017 Euros and is now third in the world rankings, behind only women's football superpowers the United States and Germany.

Neville's first game in charge of the Lionesses is a 2019 World Cup qualifier on April. 6 against Wales at Southampton's St Mary's Stadium.

Although he has no previous experience of working within the women's game and has has operated only as an assistant manager in his coaching career, the Football Association has decided he is the best person to lead the Lionesses in their bid to win the World Cup in France next year.

Neville, who holds the UEFA Pro Licence, has worked as a coach at United and with the England Under-21 side since retiring as a player.

"It adds a bit of profile to the women's game", former England player Rachel Yankey said.

Up until this point, Neville had never managed a team.

The former Manchester United and Everton defender posted in July 2011: "Relax, I'm back chilled - just battered the wife!"

The caption read: 'Extremely proud and honoured to be the head coach of the and I'm unbelievably excited about the challenges ahead!'

"I must also pay tribute to Mo Marley for her commitment to England, along with the staff who have worked with the team during this period".

Englishman John Herdman was also a contender prior to being named head coach of Canada's national men's team after more than six years in charge of the country's women's team, and Manchester City boss Nick Cushing was interviewed but signed a new contract with his club.
