Today, Instagram launched GIF stickers which can be used on photos and videos in the Stories section.

The other day we reported that Instagram appeared to be testing out the idea of allowing users to add GIFs into their Stories. From there, you'll see a new GIF option; tap that to open a library of moving stickers from Giphy. It's like when Instagram added this ability to its main feed, bringing more variation in the images you see (not just 1×1 squares). You take a great photo, crop it, and then realize it looks totally wonky when you upload it to Instagram Stories.

The GIF announcement also included a note about expanded Instagram story capability related to image and video size. You can now create the GIFs using the keyboard itself, including using new effects to create animations. The new feature is GIF support for Instagram Stories. Then you've probably heard of Google's Gboard, the third-party keyboard that lets you both swipe to spell as well as search the web. In order for that to work, many Google apps need to be optimized to run on smartphones with less RAM.

As for GIF stickers, they are rolling out today and you'll likely have it on the Instagram app sometime soon with version 29.

Instagram's GIF stickers will surely become a popular addition to Stories. In the new update, you will notice there are now more tools that you can use to create GIFs. When you upload a photo or video, you can pinch to share it in its original dimensions, whether it's portrait or landscape. Any leftover room will be filled with a custom colour gradient that matches the media being shared.
