Sentencing Larry Nassar Is Only a Start

Journalist talks about breaking Nassar story

Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman said disgraced doctor Larry Nassar deserved to spend the rest of his life in prison, but insisted more needed to be done to uncover how he managed to sexually abuse scores of athletes in his care. In issuing her sentence, Aquilina told Nassar, "I just signed your death warrant".

Last week, Simone Biles, who won gold at Rio 2016, said last week that she had been abused by Nassar, while Jordyn Wieber, who had been part of the USA 2012 team testified at the sentencing hearing.

Lou Anna Simon, the president of Michigan State University, has officially stepped down from her position on Thursday, as reported by the Detroit Free Press.

The school's attorneys have insisted Michigan State officials did not mishandle prior complaints, and asserted Nassar's methods of abuse - which many of his accusers acknowledge they didn't realise was not legitimate medical treatment until after an Indianapolis Star story in September 2016 - were particularly insidious and hard to detect.

"Collectively, the accounts show MSU missed multiple opportunities over two decades to stop Nassar, a graduate of its osteopathic medical school who became a renowned doctor but went on to molest scores of girls and women under the guise of treating them for pain", Kozlowski wrote. We are sorry for the pain caused by this bad man, and sorry that you weren't afforded a safe opportunity to pursue your sports dreams. This investigation will include both USAG and the USOC.

"We have strongly considered decrtifying USAG as a National Governing Body". Additionally, USA Gymnastics Board Of Directors' Chairman Paul Parilla, Vice Chairman Jay Binder, and Treasurer Bitsy Kelley all stepped from their positions too for the part they played in all of this. We'll have more as the news continues to develop. We were hugging each other. Blackmun said the results will be made public.

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has called for the resignation of every director of the US Gymnastics Federation. We agree with the USOC's statement that the interests of our athletes and clubs, and their sport, may be better served by moving forward with meaningful change within our organization, rather than decertification.

She put the blame on USA Gymnastics for allowing Nassar to treat gymnasts at the facility without a license.
