"They (militant outfits) are trying hard to get youth especially some educated youth into militancy but we are countering it the way we have to", he said.

The function at the stadium was attended mostly by state government officials and a few political workers. School children also took part in the celebrations and presented a colourful program.

Police Friday said that they have arrested a woman, about whom police had intelligence inputs that a non-local lady was planning to carry out suicide attack near or inside the venue of Jan 26 function in Kashmir.

Sources said the services are likely to be restored in the afternoon.

Thousands of security personnel were deployed in Srinagar and other district headquarters of Jammu and Kashmir to ensure a peaceful Republic Day amid a strike called by separatists.

Separatists had called for a shutdown across the Valley to attract worldwide attention to the Kashmir dispute.

Barricades were erected by the forces with pedestrian and vehicle movement only allowed after thorough frisking and questioning. While blocking internet services has become routine on Republic Day, mobile phone services were snapped in all the 10 districts of Kashmir Valley after a long time to prevent security incidents.

A high alert was sounded in the Kashmir Valley two days ahead of Republic Day and a message was circulated that "there is a strong input" that an 18-year-old non-Kashmiri woman might "cause a suicide bomb explosion" near or inside the Republic Day parade in Kashmir.

This year, the main Republic Day function will be held at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium instead of the regular venue, Bakshi Stadium.

The area around the cricket stadium was sealed on Wednesday for full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day Parade.
