Pence Says ‘Balanced Approach’ Needed on DACA

But some students blamed both parties, citing a long history of government shutdowns and inaction from Congress as evidence of a political system which is increasingly polarized and willful.

For starters: People are opposed to shutdowns in general. Blame was spread among all involved.

In the video below, Dreamers share how they felt when they heard the news.

That gives Congress plenty of time to enact a constitutional replacement for DACA. Almost two-thirds of independents oppose a shutdown to shield children of immigrants. Chief of staff John Kelly had to explain to members of Congress that Trump never really meant a wall per se, but rather something more like a sketchy, intermittent fence. It seems obvious that no one wants their government to be shut down; it causes nothing but problems for the American people. Fully 85 percent of those who identify as Republicans or lean conservative blamed Democrats in Congress for the shutdown.

"The government shutdown was justified because I think that Democrats have to show that their votes in the Senate aren't free", Bart said.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced on Thursday that the new outlines for a bipartisan immigration plan would stick to the original four pillars: border security and legal reforms, addressing chain migration, cancelling the visa lottery, and establishing a permanent fix to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Charles Schumer on Tuesday night in response to the Senate vote on a budget deal he made to end the three-day government shutdown Monday without protections for young undocumented immigrants known as Dreamers. Republicans in this poll oppose the program, though Democrats and independents are in support. The Dems may not want to deal with these other issues, so it would be very hard for them to vote "no" since DACA will be part of the deal.

Anti-immigration concern runs deep with the Republican Party today. Their plan would offer DACA recipients a three-year renewal of legal status, allowing them to continue to live and work in the country with no special path to citizenship. Almost half of Republicans want to decrease legal immigration, too.

The United States government can not agree on the status of the "Dreamers" or on any immigration issue.

Trump weighed in earlier Tuesday via Twitter: "Nobody knows for sure that the Republicans & Democrats will be able to reach a deal on DACA by February 8, but everyone will be trying.with a big additional focus put on Military Strength and Border Security".

Almost three-fifths of Republicans (59%) want illegal immigrants in general to be required to leave the country. "They make their own decisions about what comes to the floor, but I hope that there will be a spirit of cooperation, if not that they'll feel some pressure". Another 14% in each party would allow illegal immigrants to stay in the US but not have a path to citizenship. But for immigrant youths, the threat of deportation is real and imminent.

"He's proven over and over again that he changes up his words so many times, he claims he didn't say things when there's proof that he said it", she said. For most Republicans, ending the shutdown was more important than compromise on DACA. "It's up to the Democrats, but they (the Dreamers) should not be concerned", Trump told reporters during an impromptu question-and-answer session at the White House.

It was the president, after all, who fanned the fires that led to the shutdown and made the crisis worse with vulgar comments about immigrants.
