As light is scattered away and refracted by our atmosphere during the lunar eclipse, most of the colors are filtered out, leaving us with a reddish "blood moon".

Science experts say next Wednesday's lunar phenomenon of a blue moon, supermoon, blood moon and total lunar eclipse hasn't been viewed for 150 years, making it a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the Earth into its umbra.

"Unlike the eclipse of the sun, you don't have to rush out at a certain time, and if you sneeze you miss it", Fraknoi said. People on the East Coast will not have as great a view, since the eclipse begins just as the moon is about to set and the sky is getting lighter.

A supermoon happens when the moon is full as its orbit takes it closest to the earth.

A blue moon occurs when there are two full moons in a calendar month, about once every two or three years. "Set your alarm early and go out and take a look".

The entire celestial event will be webcast live by worldwide space agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) starting at 5:30 a.m. EST (1030 GMT). That's when the moon slides into the earth's shadow.

The total lunar eclipse will happen when the moon will enter the Earth's shadow, ensuring that the Sun's rays do not fall on it.

Eagle-eyed early-risers can catch shadows starting to creep over the moon at 2:51 a.m. on Wednesday.

Unlike a total solar eclipse, a total lunar eclipse will not damage your eyes. Johnston said the January 21, 2019 lunar eclipse will be visible throughout all of the USA and will be a supermoon, though it won't be a blue moon.

Beginning at 5:45 a.m. EST (1045 GMT), the Slooh telescope will live stream the 5 hour and 17 minute eclipse. "Instead of this little, tiny shadow of the moon on the Earth, you have this big shadow of the Earth covering up the tiny moon".

"For the [CONTINENTAL] US, the viewing will be best in the west", said Gordon Johnston, programme executive and lunar blogger at Nasa. It's best to head to a viewing point at a higher elevation, with a clear line of sight to the horizon toward the west.

Total eclipse begins at 4:52 a.m.

Sadly, people in the United Kingdom will not get to see lunar eclipse because it is only visible on Earth's night side. "The overall eclipse ends at 12.08 midnight on Feb 1", he explained.

For those in the Middle East, Asia, eastern Russia, Australia and New Zealand, the event will be visible during moonrise on the morning of January 31st.

Perhaps the most impressive (and visually noticeable) part of this lunar event is the fact that it's also a "blood" moon.
