Magic Johnson: Anyone in Nassar Cover Up at MSU Should Be Fired

Michigan State to name former Gov. John Engler interim president, reports say

Former Gov. John Engler expected to be named interim MSU president

David Doyle was the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party while Engler was governor.

"I think we start from the standpoint: How do we change things?" he said.

Members of the MSU Board of Trustees, which closed ranks around Simon and the administration and was no more interested in determining who at the school might have enabled Nassar's 20 years of assaultive behavior, should not be the ones who pick Simon's successor. About 60 girls and women are expected to testify during the hearing, similar to a hearing in nearby Lansing that ended last week after more than 150 victims came forward.

Engler would replace Lou Anna K. Simon who resigned as last week as the university deals with the fallout from the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal.

One student felt compelled to jump onto the board table to be heard.

"This was not a democratic process", he said. "Maybe because it was going to put them in a better light, but you simply can't do that".

Faculty liaison Laura McCabe read a statement echoing student frustrations, saying that the faculty "learned of their apparent decision to select Gov. Engler through public media".

Previously, Beekman served as vice president and secretary of the Board of Trustees since January 1, 2018.

Former Michigan State rower Cate Hannum, who was treated by Nassar and wrote an open letter criticizing Simon's handling of the case nearly a year ago, said Hollis' departure gives her hope for the future of the school's athletic program.

After Simon resigned, Engler, Blanchard and former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm were suggested to the board as possible interim presidents. He commented that the Michigan State University could be facing trouble for allegedly holding "certain information" from the public.

"Should the Board indeed appoint ex-Governor Engler we will sadly be forced to bring a motion to hold a vote of No Confidence in the Board of Trustees to Academic Congress via electronic ballot".

The faculty members say the Board of Trustees has made a "rushed" decision "ignoring major stakeholders" of the MSU community. The group's entire board of directors is resigning under pressure from the United States Olympic Committee. The accused - one of whom Redmond says confessed to the rape - reportedly remained at MSU with no clear punishment from the school, athletic department or NCAA.

"What we got were shady backroom dealings, which resulted in the political appointment of a straight, white, wealthy male who is just conservative enough to keep our elected officials down Michigan Avenue pacified for a little while longer", he said.

Michigan State has denied there was any cover-up of the abuse and has apologized to all those affected by their failure to stop Nassar.

Trustees also named another former governor, Democrat Jim Blanchard, to advise the school as it faces numerous lawsuits and investigations.
