Spain: Authorities Recover Four Tons of Stolen Oranges
02 February 2018, 12:05 | Mandy Simon
Three vehicles were found to be transporting thousands of oranges
Spain is Europe's largest orange producer. The four tons of oranges are reportedly worth around 1,400 euros ($1,735). A thriving industry, which is poised to attract a lot of undesired attention as well.
Police then got word a shipment of oranges from the nearby town of Carmona had been reported stolen.
The care was stuffed with hundreds of oranges. Still, the owners reported the theft.
After a short pursuit, police managed to stop two of the vehicles.
This aroused the suspicion of the officers, who gave chase, stopped the vehicles and caught the thieves red-handed. As a result, as soon as the doors opened, most of the 4,000 kilos of oranges spilled onto the road.
When the drivers saw the police cars ahead, they quickly changed direction, sending alarm belles off for the authorities as they chased them down the highway. Although caught red-handed, they had an explanation at the ready.
None of the oranges had labelling on them.
Spain produces about half of all of the European Union's oranges, according to Eurostat. With so much fruit in the backseat, it would have been incredible had they gotten away with their suspected crime!
