A series of events in February will show Black History and the important contributions of people throughout history, an A-State official said Thursday. Our goal is to be a district that recognizes, respects, understands and learns from each individual's unique background, realizing that equality comes from tearing down boundaries and building each other up.

Southern studies and sociology professor Brian Foster delivers the keynote address for the UM Black History Month opening ceremony. Originally billed as "Negro History Week", Black History Month began in the United States in 1926, created by the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History along with historian Carter G. Woodson.

Here's our list of the top 15 black folks to make history in 2017.

For the first day of Black History Month, the doodle is adorned with a drawing of Carter G. Woodson.

The Hanford History Project began in 2014 and documents African American immigration, segregation, and civil rights history at the Hanford Site.


Woodson strongly believed that education was key to eliminating racism.

"It's a very, very well put together program and it's put together by a collaborative effort of many folks and organizations", said Joan Cromwell of the Chelsea Black Community (CBC).

The university is also celebrating the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass and has several lectures and events throughout the month.

"By me taking this class, I'm learning about my history and my culture and it's an eye-opener", he said.

Rob Hook at Friendly Package Liquors said he wasn't surprised at the effect the social probation had on his sales - which were about normal compared to this time in years past.
