Auto Expo 2018: Mahindra unveils first convertible SUV 'TUV Stinger'
The Auto Expo kickstarted on Wednesday, where manufacturing company Mahindra and Mahindra displayed their range of "future of mobility" with six new electric vehicles lined-up at their pavilion. Concept cars and ready-to-launch models powered by regular internal combustion engines also vied for attention.
Echoing similar sentiments, Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said Tata Motors is committed to the future of mobility, specially the government's vision in the electric vehicles space.
Among its wide range of electric vehicle concepts was e-KUV100, India's first electric SUV which combines the benefits of an SUV with the unique advantage of an electric vehicle. "We want the government to give emphasis on the faster development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and support local manufacturing".
Companies unveiled 65 new vehicles/concepts and launched 14 products across segments on the first day. The company plans to add a new CNG vertical and introduce new models of diesel and electric vehicles in the coming quarter.
Several auto executives, including from M&M and Honda Cars India, said the real game changer will be policy - whether the Centre brings out a new EV policy or retains the existing one.
The showcase of electric and hybrid vehicles at the expo, which also had the presence of Bollywood star Akshay Kumar and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, was not restricted only to passenger vehicles. However, considering the vehicle has been showcased again, we can be hopeful that the project is not dead yet. The luxury SUV, which has won many worldwide awards, comes with a 7-speed Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission and its new 2.2L engine delivering 178 BHP power and 420 NM torque. Hero Electric, the country's largest electric two-wheeler maker, unveiled eight electric two-wheelers and said these would be launched in a phased manner. A fast charging option is also expected to be available with the auto.
"Our vision is to transform public transportation by designing, developing, and marketing a breakthrough, India- specific solution that makes our city buses emission-free, cost-effective and scalable", Ashok Leyland Managing Director Vinod K Dasari said.
The company's conceptual TUV Stinger was also showcased in the event.
Currently, Lohia Auto manufactures electric and diesel vehicles comprising two and three wheelers.
