Meanwhile, Trump's staunchest religious supporters, white evangelical Christians, have also developed long-standing ties to Russian Federation through worldwide pro-life and anti-LGTB conferences and organizations. (Applause.) For 60 years, Doug devoted his time and passion to this Prayer Breakfast and to many other wonderful causes.

Such actions are powered by prayer, he said.

He added, in remarks prepared for the event, "All we have to do is open our eyes and look around us, and we can see God's hand".

"America is a nation of believers, and together we are strengthened by the power of prayer", Trump said. "Our currency declares, 'In God we trust'".

The words "praise be to God" are etched on top of the Washington Monument, Trump noted, "and those same words are etched in the hearts of people".

Ah, yes. In addition to our rights coming from the Lord our God, we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal-except immigrants. "No matter what, no Earthly force can take those rights away", the president said.

"Your presence reminds us of Jesus's words in the Book of Matthew: 'With God all things are possible, '" said Trump. These can hardly be considered proof that America is a founded in faith.

The speech was relatively short and focused on the importance of faith. He said the militants had tortured Christians, Jews and even fellow Muslims in the territories they occupied, but that they had been nearly totally overrun.

Trump discussed the role faith played in the life of North Korean defector Ji Seong-ho, whose triumphant story of freedom the president shared during his first State of the Union address. "But we will never rest until that job is completely done", the president said.

He hinted at a desire to "worship without fear", a nod to religious freedom concerns, which is an issue that resonates with many evangelicals. He made no mention of his recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a landmark shift in US policy that was extremely popular with evangelical voters and a segment of hard-line pro-Israel American Jews.

"America will flourish, as long as our liberty, and in particular our religious liberty, is allowed to flourish", he said.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., who spoke after Trump and described the "miracles" of his and others' surviving a June shooting at a congressional baseball practice, expressed his appreciation for Trump's challenge previous year.

"For years, ISIS had brutally tortured and murdered Christians, Jews, religious minorities, and countless Muslims", Trump said.

'I said, "Do you love your mom?"

"Thank you everyone for praying for me", Sophia said. Predictably, President Trump showed support to his base by talking about Christian Nationalism, the belief that there is a specific goal that God has given to the United States that needs to be enacted by Christians.

Russian officials attended Trump's National Prayer Breakfast in much larger numbers than previously - about three times the number attending a year ago, a spokesman for the group that organizes the breakfast told reporters. It is co-hosted by both Democratic and Republican members of House and Senate weekly prayer groups.
