South Africa: Nelson Mandela Foundation Remembers Madiba's Release

Ramaphosa admits'disunity as Zuma fights exit

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa believes the future of President Jacob Zuma will be resolved at the ANC national executive committee (NEC) meeting on Monday in Pretoria. He also promised to tackle corruption.

"As you have all heard, the national executive committee of the African National Congress will be meeting tomorrow to discuss this very matter".

'We all know and anticipate that they are dealing with the current issue that is facing our country, Faiez Jacobs, the party's provincial secretary, told eNCA television.

Since Ramaphosa was elected ANC president in December, pressure has been mounting for Zuma to resign as head of state amid allegations of his involvement in a series of corruption scandals.

But Ramaphosa put paid to all the claims when he declared: "It is the interests of you, our people, that must be put first, and not the interests of anyone else".

Ramaphosa, who is expected to succeed, says discussions that he has held with had to be conducted with "care and purpose" and with the aim of uniting South Africans.

Applause when Ramaphosa finally gets to #Zexit, 40 minutes into speech. Then he referred to the topic that people really wanted to hear about - his confidential negotiations in recent days with Zuma over the president's exit after a scandal-marred tenure.

"In defence of Madiba's legacy, we will continue to wage a relentless war on corruption and mismanagement of the resources of our country", said Ramaphosa.

"We will at the same time continue to resist any form or attempt to capture our state institutions for the self-enrichment of a few".

The ANC president says that there is a careful approach to what is happening with the transition of power.

The jibe is in apparent reference to Cyril Ramaphosa's absence from politics to run businesses where he made a fortune before returning to active politics five years ago, becoming Zuma's successor.

"The centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela gives us a great opportunity for renewal and rebuilding".

Addressing an ANC rally in the eastern province of Mpumalanga, Gwede Mantashe said ANC officials should be fearless and must be able to make hard decisions, but leaders had a duty to "analyze and mitigate risks".

On the same day in 1990, Nelson Mandela spoke to euphoric crowds who filled the packed public square in front of City Hall, hours after his release from prison.
