Samsung begins mass producing world's largest capacity SSD with 30.72TB storage space

Samsung Revealed World's Largest SSD with 30TB of Storage

In another first, Samsung Electronics has revealed the world's largest capacity Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) SSD with a mind-boggling capacity of 30.72TB- packed in just a 2.5-inch form factor.

Samsung has announced that it has started mass production of 30.72TB SSDs. This latest SSD offers exactly twice the capacity of Samsung's previous high watermark: the 15.36TB PM1633a that was unveiled back in 2016.

There is a combination of 32 1TB NAND flash packages that jointly built the PM1643 SSD, each comprising 16 stacked layers of 512Gb V-NAND chips. The new drive has a 12GBps SAS interface with random read and write speeds of up to 400,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) and 50,000 IOPS respectively. Sequential read performance clocks in at up to 2,100 MB/s, while write speeds are given as 1,700 MB/s. Samsung touts that this is four-times the read speed and three-times the write speed of a typical 2.5-inch SATA SSD. This is known that Samsung will release different ranges of SAS SSDs ranging from 16.36TB, 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB, to 800GBS. Jaesoo Han, executive vice president of Samsung's Memory Sales and Marketing Team commented that, "Samsung will continue to move aggressively in meeting the shifting demand toward SSDs over 10TB", which is good news for everyone.

With this SSD, Samsung is debuting a new controller architecture that integrates nine controllers into a single package, enabling a greater amount of space within the SSD form factor to be used for storage. Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology is used to interconnect 8 Gb DDR4 chips into ten TSV DRAM packages each totaling 4 GB. It also provides support for metadata protection and data retention and recovery after a sudden power failure. Samsung also said in its press release that the drive is created to endure heavy workloads and can survive one full drive write per day (DWPD), which is equivalents writing 30.72TB data into the drive daily for the 5-year warranty period, which seems to be quite a bold claim. The prime target for these versions includes various market segments such as the government, financial services, healthcare, education, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, social media, business services, retail, and communications sectors.
