Lewis Hamilton: Nowhere I would rather be than Mercedes

23 February 2018, 02:00 | Susie Olson

Mercedes launch 2018 F1 car but Toto Wolff slams halo: 'If you gave me a chainsaw I would cut it off'

'Red Bull, Ferrari may make a play for Hamilton'

He hoped also that Mercedes had "ironed out some of the creases" from past year with a narrower and more tightly packaged vehicle, whose official F1 W09 EQ Power+ name is already quite a mouthful.

As McLaren technical chief on chassis Tim Goss said on the subject of teams copying each other: "Now we have had a year to learn about the cars and how they perform with these new bodywork regulations, then you will build on that". 'But there's no rush, no panic and no pressure from other drivers or teams.

"We've tried to preserve what we had in terms of speed in the vehicle and find more drivability", he said.

"He's been here six years so we are talking about extending that to a very long time with the same driver in the same team".

I am always in awe of the team.

"Toto knows that I know there is no-one better, so he's not going to be looking anywhere else, and he knows that I know there is no-one else better, so I'm not going to be looking anywhere else". 'We expect to come up with news soon.

"Again, some of the suspension, some of the roll issues that we had, some of the ride issues that we had, some of the floor characteristics, those things will be improved quite a lot".

"I think that really shows my commitment. So we were careful not to lose the car's many strengths just to overcome the difficulties", stated team boss, Toto Wolff.

Hamilton flirted with talk of retirement at times last season and has played down his hopes of matching Michael Schumacher's record seven titles.

Bottas will be racing for his future as one of a number of drivers - along with Hamilton and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo - whose contracts expire at the end of the season. For sure there has been a lot of effort on the new auto and the attention to detail is impressive.

"I think we need to look after the driver's safety but what we have implemented is aesthetically not appealing". And the step up the works team has made.

"For me, Lewis is the personalisation of hunger", Wolff said.

The halo cockpit safety system will feature on all F1 cars and is created to protect drivers from flying debris and crashes. First time around there are certain things baked in and you will not go about changing, like wheelbase or weight distribution within bounds.

Sky Sports F1 is the only place to watch every Formula 1 Grand Prix, qualifying and practice session live in 2018.
