Trump calls for arming many teachers, more guards at schools

Bobby Bright allowed to run as Republican in June congressional election

"They were very gentle".

Trump then asked the audience not to "mind if I go off script a bit because it's sort of boring".

"My administration has had the most successful first year in the history of the presidency", Trump said. "They'll take away your Second Amendment, which we will never allow to happen".

"By the way, if you only had to choose one, the Second Amendment, tax cuts?"

"But that's a case where somebody was outside, they're trained, they didn't react properly under pressure or they were coward", Trump added.

In a rollicking 75-minute address to the premier annual gathering of grassroots conservatives, Trump smashed his enemies, joked about his hair, defended his controversial new gun proposals, and warned conservatives against electoral complacency.

Republicans face stiff political headwinds in 2018 and president said that if the party loses the House or the Senate, Democrats will be eager to roll back the gains Republicans have made during their two years in power.

He emphasised the importance of future elections, including the upcoming midterms and 2020 presidential contest, warning the crowd not be complacent. "I really believe it, I mean judges, regulations, everything".

"Democrats are always fighting for the criminal they are not fighting for law abiding citizens", he said.

The President also talked at length about the debate over gun control, in the wake of February 14 school shooting in Florida that left 17 persons dead. His comments on the topic came as nearly a postscript at the end of his 75-minute address.

"It's time to make our schools a much harder target for attackers".

The White House has said Trump will soon lay out a package of school and gun safety proposals for Congress to consider. "He was a leader, a great man", Trump said.

He went on an extended riff about immigration, vowing to build his promised border wall, lamenting a system he claimed was woefully broken, and declaring Democrats were unwilling to accept an agreement that would reform the DACA program.

Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for Prosperity, said Pence's efforts amounted to a "pep rally" for potentially unmotivated conservatives.

Trump has also been accused of sexual misconduct by almost 20 women.

The Republicans who organize CPAC and fill its speaking roster have sometimes cringed at Trump's harsh rhetoric, but they tolerate it in the hopes he can help shepherd through a staunchly conservative agenda. "I don't want people that are going to come in and be accepting all of the gifts of our country for the next 50 years and contribute nothing". John McCain, the ailing Arizona Republican, he lashed out at his vote against a health care repeal that many Republicans backed.
