Canadian skier David Duncan, his wife, Maja Margrethe Duncan, and trainer William Ryan Raine spent Friday night behind bars, accused of stealing a vehicle during the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

A joint statement from the Duncans offering an apology did not offer specifics, saying only their behaviour "was not up to the standards expected of us as members of the Canadian Olympic Team or as Canadians".

"I would like to apologize profusely for my inexcusable actions", he said.

"Words are not enough to express how sorry I am", he said. I have let down my teammates, friends and family down.

Taking part in the Olympics is undoubtedly exciting, but one group of Canadians went a little too far.

The unnamed athlete and his wife have been charged with theft and the manager who was driving the auto was charged with theft and drunk driving, according to local reports.

Duncan told authorities that he was cold and it remains unclear if he was the one behind the wheel. The legal limit in South Korea is 0.05.

Duncan, 35, finished eighth in the men's ski cross small final on Wednesday.

With the games set to conclude on Sunday, Canada have enjoyed their most successful winter games yet; their 11 gold medals placing them third behind Germany and Norway overall, and a healthy portion of their 28 medals won overall.

The team's official slogan for Pyeongchang was: "Be Virtuous, Be Victorious, be Olympic".

At a news conference on Saturday, Canadian Olympic Committee chief executive Chris Overholt said: "We can confirm that an incident occurred involving the police around midnight Friday or early morning Saturday".
