Syria: Are We In, Or Out?

US forces supporting the US-backed Kurdish-militants deploy on the frontlines some 50 kilometers north of Raqqah Syria

Eight Turkish soldiers were killed fighting in northern Syria on Thursday, the military said.

Turkish-led Syrian opposition fighters have advanced steadily since January 20 when they launched an assault on Afrin, controlled by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).

Votel, who oversees all United States troops in the Middle East, also warned that Russian Federation is "trying to cultivate multi-dimensional ties to Iran" as they both share "an overarching desire to sideline, if not expel, the USA from the region".

Turkey considers the Kurdish militiamen there terrorists. Syrian state media said the aim is to defend Afrin.

On Monday French President Emmanuel Macron's office said he had told Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan that the United Nations demand "applied to all of Syria, including Afrin, and should be implemented everywhere and by all without any delay".

Al-Mayadeen said the airstrike occurred after the Popular Forces hit a Turkish helicopter gunship. No further details were immediately available.

The death toll, released by the Turkish military in two separate statements, brings the number of Turkish soldiers killed since the launch of "Operation Olive Branch" to at least 40.

He said that the Free Syrian Army (FSA), on the other hand, has had 116 of its members killed.

Meanwhile, Syrian regime airstrikes and bombardment have killed hundreds of people over 12 days in eastern Ghouta.

"The UN Security Council resolution - unanimously adopted almost a week ago - created an opportunity for hundreds of thousands of children to finally get respite from the brutal and unabated violence they have been living through", she said.

French President Emmanuel Macron and President Donald Trump discussed the situation in Syria over the phone and for the immediate implementation of the 30-day cease-fire, the French president's office said.

Since the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2401 on February 24, Ankara has argued that it does not cover the ongoing operation in Afrin. He said he's extremely vigilant on the issue, the statement said.

Venediktov added that the U.S. has been supporting the Kurds with the latest weapons. They demanded Assad's government should be held accountable for the use of chemical weapons, attacks on civilians and the humanitarian blockade.
