Netanyahu visits U.S. for Trump AIPAC

The news cast a shadow over talks that Netanyahu, the dominant Israeli politician of his generation, was due to hold later in the day with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara Netanyahu as they arrive at the White House.

In the Oval Office, Netanyahu praised Trump's highly contentious decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem - which both Israel and the Palestinians claim as their capital.

Netanyahu also wants Trump to attend the opening of the USA embassy in Jerusalem, which is set for May and tied to the 70th anniversary of the founding of modern Israel.

At the same time, the meeting comes just after the United States announced it will open its embassy in Jerusalem in May to coincide with Israel's 70th anniversary celebrations. What's that for?' I said, 'We're not going to spend a billion dollars.' And we're actually doing it for about $250,000.

Top-selling daily Yediot Aharonot said while Netanyahu was being questioned for five hours at his official Jerusalem residence, Sara was being grilled at national fraud squad headquarters near Tel Aviv.

The two leaders are expected to discuss a variety of regional issues focusing primarily on Iran, the peace process and regional military issues.

The embattled United States president warmly welcomed the embattled Israeli prime minister, claiming ties between their two countries had "never been better" as he floated a May trip that would be a major security and diplomatic challenge.

While not making any specific commitments, Trump said, "we're looking at coming".

"Last night a state's witness deal was signed between the Investigations, Intelligence and Commerce Monitoring Divisions at the Israel Securities Authority and the Israel Police National Economic Crime Unit. and Nir Hefetz", a police statement released by the Justice Ministry said.

"If I can, I will", Trump added, "Israel is very special to me, special country, special people".

"It's practicing aggression everywhere, including on our own borders", Netanyahu told Trump. "That is our common challenge". This will be the fifth time Trump and Netanyahu have met.

Netanyahu will address the American Israel Public Affairs Committee Policy Conference in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, followed by meetings with members of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives.

Trump's December 6 Jerusalem declaration outraged Palestinians and broke with decades of worldwide consensus that the disputed city's status must be negotiated between the two sides.

The Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

"I may. I may", he said. "So we're working very hard on it".

But Trump conceded: "If they don't, you don't have peace, and that's a possibility also".
