MacDougall said although the National Consumer Commission ordered Enterprise Foods to recall three products‚ the company had made a decision to be extra vigilant and voluntary recall all products produced at its facilities in Germiston‚ Gauteng‚ and Polokwane in Limpopo. Of those, 659 patients have been traced and 180 of them haved died - a 27 percent fatality rate.
Since January 2017, 948 people have contracted listeriosis which is caused by bacteria from soil, water, vegetation and animal feces which can contaminate fresh food - notably fresh meat.
"Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from over 30 percent of the environmental samples collected from this site, which happens to be the Enterprise factory in Polokwane", Motsoaledi said.
He did acknowledge that the government had linked the ST6 strain of listeria bacteria detected in Enterprise facilities with the outbreak that has resulted in 180 deaths.
Media in South Africa reported that hundreds of customers had flocked the factories and stores suspected of being the source of the listeriosis infection, returning goods they had already purchased and demanding refunds.
In a statement, Mwamba announced that most cold meats that are stocked by retail chains were supplied by a company called Enterprise Food whose meat production was from Polokwane and Germiston.
Both companies say they have not yet quantified the cost of the national recall of their products.
