GETTY SHORTAGE People are being told to use as little water as possible

Water shortage

Thames Water has not said when households can expect water supplies to return, but said engineers were working around the clock to resolve the problems.

Claire Sharp, customer director, said: "We're beginning to thaw out and as the temperature rises this causes bursts and leaks to appear on both our own water network and our customers' pipework".

"Where possible, take short showers rather than baths, do not leave taps running unnecessarily and only run washing machines and dish washers when you have a full load", a statement from Thames Water said.

The recent bout of extreme weather across the United Kingdom has resulted in burst pipes, damage to water infrastructure and widespread outages.

Householders are having to use bottled water while pipes undergo work to fix leaks and repair bursts amid milder conditions which followed the deep freeze.

Councillors at the Kent flood risk management meeting today criticised South East Water for its handling of the situation.

Others have rallied to help their neighbours, offering to collect water for elderly or disabled people.

"Water is an essential part of life".

It is estimated 5,000 homes in the county have had their supply cut off following the extreme changes in temperature.

Anyone who sees a leak can report it to South East Water on their interactive map https://inyourarea.digdat.co.uk/southeastwater where you will also find updates on supply issues in their area.

At a supermarket in London's south, Thames Water employees distributed crates of bottled water to a queue of people whose homes had their water cut off following the bad weather.

We are very sorry to our customers who are without water.

"We have done the leaks from the trunk mains and we are finding leaks in the network and fixing them".

Yes. Water companies abide by rules regarding service and compensation set by Ofwat, the regulator in England and Wales.
