In a new Wall Street Journal report about the Daniels payoff, sources tell the publication that "after Mr. Trump's victory, Mr. Cohen complained to friends that he had yet to be reimbursed for the payment to [Daniels]".
"[Cohen] wired the money to a lawyer for former actress Stephanie Clifford, known professionally as Stormy Daniels, from an account at First Republic Bank".
Not only is there additional evidence that Trump is connected to a payment centering around an agreement which bars Ms. Clifford from discussing an alleged sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, but the bank who facilitated it "flagged the transaction as suspicious and reported it to the Treasury Department, according to a person familiar with the matter".
It wasn't until almost a year later that City National Bank, where Cohen's funds were received by Clifford's lawyer, launched its own internal inquiry around the transaction. Cohen declined to comment on whether Trump or anyone else reimbursed him. Daniels received the money transfer on October 27, 2016, just under two weeks before the presidential election, according to the report. "The payment to Ms. Clifford was lawful, and was not a campaign contribution or a campaign expenditure by anyone".
